How to Clean a Dog Lick Mat’s Grooves

To clean a dog's lick mat, remove leftover food, wash with dish soap and water, gently brush inside the grooves, rinse thoroughly and let the mat dry before putting it away. The part worth slowing down for is the bottom of the pattern: a mat can look empty from above while food remains beside a raised edge.

This guide focuses on getting those small spaces clean without digging at the silicone. For Chewise Pick & Lick, the current care instructions also allow dishwasher cleaning. For another mat, check that model's instructions before choosing a machine cycle or cleaning method.

Start before the leftovers dry in place

After the supervised licking session, take the mat away and remove loose food with a soft utensil. Do not leave it with your dog as a cleanup job: a lick mat is not a chew toy. Avoid scraping with a knife or another sharp edge.

The FDA's pet-food handling guidance recommends washing pet feeding bowls and utensils with soap and hot water after use. Treat the food-contact surface of a lick mat with the same care, while following its material-specific instructions. A quick rinse is a useful start, but it is not the full cleaning routine.

A groove-by-groove hand-washing routine

  1. Loosen the residue. Rinse away loose food. If a spread has dried into the pattern, let warm soapy water soften it before brushing. There is no single soaking time that fits every food or mat; check whether the residue has loosened instead of forcing it out.
  2. Support the mat. Lay it where you can see the texture and keep it from folding over itself. Use dish soap and a soft-bristled brush reserved for pet feeding equipment.
  3. Brush in more than one direction. Work along the grooves, then across them with gentle strokes. Circle around raised letters, corners and the inside of the outer rim. Change the angle of the brush rather than pushing harder when a narrow area is missed.
  4. Turn it over. Wash both faces, the outer edge and the suction cups. Check inside each cup and around its rim for food or greasy film. Do not assume that the side facing the floor stayed clean.
  5. Rinse and inspect. Rinse away soap, then examine the mat under good light. If a speck remains in a groove, wash that area again. Do not cover leftover food with a fresh spread.

Use gentle brush strokes around the raised pattern, then rinse. Check the groove bottoms and outer rim as well as the broad surface.

What if food is still caught in the pattern?

Dried wet food: soften it again in soapy water and return with the brush. Picking at a hard patch can damage the surface without cleaning the surrounding groove.

A greasy spread: work dish soap through the affected area and rinse thoroughly. Check the edges and cup rims, where a film can be easy to miss.

A persistent smell or visible residue: do not refill the mat yet. Rewash and inspect it. If it cannot be cleaned properly, or you find tears or loose material, stop using it and contact the manufacturer about replacement. Avoid improvised solvent, boiling or abrasive treatments unless the manufacturer specifically permits them.

Can a lick mat go in the dishwasher?

Pick & Lick is dishwasher safe. That does not mean every lick mat is. Check the care directions for your exact product, including any rack, temperature or cycle restrictions. The current Pick & Lick page confirms dishwasher suitability but does not specify a particular rack or maximum temperature; do not infer permission for every high-heat or sanitizing setting.

Remove substantial food residue first. Load the mat so water can reach the textured surfaces, rather than sandwiching it between dishes or folding it shut. Follow the appliance's loading guidance and the product's care directions. When the cycle finishes, inspect the grooves again; if food remains, clean it before reuse.

Dry the hidden spots before storage

Drain water from the grooves and suction cups and let both faces dry in a clean area. Avoid stacking a damp mat flat against another mat or sealing it into a container. Wash and dry the cleaning brush too, and wash your hands after handling used feeding equipment.

Before the next serving, look for split edges, torn sections or loose pieces. Stop using a damaged mat. If the mat is clean but still will not grip your chosen surface, use our lick mat suction troubleshooting guide to check the surface and seating separately.
