How Many Bully Sticks Can My Dog Have?

Bully sticks are food, not air. Put in your dog's weight and the stick you buy, and get the honest number: calories per stick, and how many a week fit inside their day.

A stick this size needs a holder that fits it. The last inch is the part dogs swallow.

Where the numbers come from.

Two inputs, one convention. Each is sourced, and each is an average, so treat the result as a ceiling rather than a prescription.

Calories in the stick

A 2013 veterinary analysis measured bully sticks at 3.0 kcal per gram (range 2.96–3.07), tight across brands. Per stick the spread was huge, 45 to 133 kcal, because thickness varies far more than labels admit. So we estimate weight from length and thickness, then multiply by 3.0. Standard thickness lands on 15 kcal per inch, the study's own mean.

Calories your dog needs

Resting need is 70 × (weight in kg) to the power 0.75, multiplied by a life-stage factor. That is the standard veterinary formula. Real dogs can sit 20–30% either side of it, and your vet's number beats this one.

The 10% rule

Treats, chews included, are conventionally capped at 10% of daily calories so the other 90% can carry complete, balanced nutrition. One week of that allowance, divided by one stick, is the number at the top of the page.

What people ask before they trust the number.

How many calories is a bully stick?

Roughly 3 kcal per gram, so it depends almost entirely on size. A thin 6" stick lands near 45–60 kcal; a standard 6" near 90; a standard 12" near 185; a jumbo 12" can clear 500. Measured sticks in the 2013 study ran 45 to 133 kcal each.

Can my dog have a bully stick every day?

For a medium or large dog on a standard 6" stick, daily usually fits inside the 10% allowance. For a dog under about 20 lb it usually does not; one standard stick can be a quarter of their entire day. Smaller sticks, or part of a stick, solve it.

Do bully sticks make dogs gain weight?

Only the way any food does: if the chew is added on top of full meals instead of counted inside the day. The fix is arithmetic, not avoidance. Subtract the chew from the bowl.

Is the last inch really the dangerous part?

That's the common failure: the stick softens, gets short enough to swallow, and goes down whole. Supervising and taking the stub away works. So does a holder that grips the end so it can't be swallowed in the first place.
