How to Measure a Bully Stick Before Buying a Holder

Measure the width and thickness of the end you plan to secure, then check several points along the section that must enter the holder. A bully stick's length, package weight or “jumbo” label cannot tell you whether that individual chew will fit.

This guide answers a practical buying question: what measurements should you have ready before choosing a holder? You will need the actual chew and a ruler with a clear scale. Calipers can help with an uneven shape, but are optional. Keep the chew away from your dog while measuring.

1. Find the section that needs to fit

Start at the end you intend to insert. Look along the section that will pass through the opening and meet the grip, using the holder's instructions to identify the intended placement. Do not measure only the narrow tip if a wider ridge or bend sits immediately behind it.

Inspect a few sticks from the bag rather than using one as a guarantee for the rest. Keep each stick's measurements together: a thin one and a thick one can need different fit checks even when their packaging is identical.

2. Measure across, then turn and measure again

  1. Record the width. Place the ruler beside the gripping end, with its zero mark aligned to one edge. Read across to the opposite edge, perpendicular to the stick's length. Use the outside edges, including raised ridges.
  2. Record the thickness at that same point. Turn the chew a quarter turn and measure the other direction. A flattened stick needs two measurements; calling both of them a single “diameter” hides its shape.
  3. Repeat along the insertion section. Check nearby bulges, taper and changes in shape. Note the largest dimensions you find and where the section becomes narrower. With calipers, touch the surface gently rather than squeezing it.

Record the unit with every reading. Keep inches with inches, or convert consistently: 1 inch equals 25.4 mm. Do not round down a reading to make it appear to fit.

3. Compare with the opening, not the outside of the holder

The current Chewise size guide lists these opening measurements:

Holder size Listed opening Equivalent in millimeters
Small 1.0 inch 25.4 mm
Standard 1.1 inches 27.94 mm
Extra Large 1.6 inches 40.64 mm

The millimeter figures are unit conversions, not tighter manufacturing tolerances. These listed openings are a starting point, not a minimum-to-maximum range of chew sizes guaranteed to grip. The holder's outside dimensions are a separate measurement.

If your reading is close to a listed opening, or a ridge exceeds it, ask for help before ordering. Do not assume an exact numerical match leaves enough room for normal placement. Likewise, a smaller chew entering the opening does not establish that the mechanism can secure it.

Your dog's ability to handle the holder still matters. Do not choose an oversized holder for a small dog solely to accommodate a thick stick; a different chew may be the better pairing.

4. Add shape notes when two numbers are not enough

Write down “flattened,” “tapered,” “curved” or “braided” beside your measurements. For a braid, measure the complete bundle, not one strand. For a curved stick, note the bend near the intended gripping end; measuring the overall width of the curl answers a different question from measuring the chew itself.

Our straight, curly and braided compatibility guide explains those placement issues. Do not force, shave or unbraid a chew to make a holder close, or add improvised packing around a narrow end.

A useful photo set for a fit question

Before buying, send hello@chewisenow.com the holder size you are considering, your dog's weight, and the chew's brand and product name. Include a full-length photo plus two close-ups of the gripping section beside a ruler, one for width and one after turning it for thickness. Keep the ruler level with the measured section and photograph straight on; an angled photo can make the reading misleading.

For example, write “gripping end: approximately 0.9 inch wide × 0.5 inch thick; flattened, with a ridge behind the tip.” Those are illustrative measurements only, not an approved pairing. Written readings and photos are more useful than “it's a large stick.”

After delivery, confirm the individual pairing

Measurements help you shop; they do not replace the physical setup check. Follow your model's instructions, tighten normally and check the hold by hand. Stop if the chew moves or pulls free, or if the holder cannot assemble as intended. Recheck each new stick.

Stay with your dog during use and remove the setup if the chew loosens, pieces separate or your dog bites the holder. VCA Animal Hospitals' chew-toy guidance also stresses supervision and removing items when dogs chew off chunks or bite hard enough to stress their teeth. No measurement or holder makes chewing risk-free.

With your width, thickness and shape notes ready, compare the Chewise holder range. The goal is a suitable dog–chew–holder combination, confirmed with the actual items.
