Are Bully Sticks Safe for Dogs? Risks and Practical Precautions

Bully sticks are not risk-free, and they are not suitable for every dog. Before offering one, consider your dog’s teeth, chewing habits, health and diet. A holder can help you manage the chew, but it cannot guarantee safety.

What are bully sticks made of?

Bully sticks, also called pizzle sticks, are dried bull or steer penis. Check the package for ingredients, feeding instructions and storage information rather than assuming all products are identical.

Risks to consider before offering a bully stick

Swallowing pieces

A dog may swallow a chew or a broken-off piece. Choking and digestive obstruction are different problems; a dog that is still breathing can still need veterinary attention after swallowing something. See VCA’s guidance on swallowed foreign bodies and our bully stick choking guide.

Tooth injury

Hard chews can damage teeth. VCA’s fractured-teeth guidance specifically includes pizzle sticks among items to eliminate when preventing further tooth fractures. Ask your veterinarian whether a softer alternative is more appropriate, especially if your dog has dental problems.

Calories and handling

A small 2013 Tufts and University of Guelph study found variable calorie content and bacterial contamination in some sampled bully sticks. It does not establish the calorie content or contamination rate of every product sold today. Include chews in your dog’s calorie allowance, follow the manufacturer’s storage directions and wash your hands after handling them.

Where a holder fits into the routine

A Chewise bully stick holder is intended to grip a compatible chew. Check the holder size guide and setup instructions, then check the actual fit before every use. If the chew slips or cannot be secured, do not offer that combination to your dog.

Stay nearby throughout chewing. Stop if your dog bites the holder itself, pulls the chew loose or breaks off pieces. Do not rely on a fixed number of minutes or a universal leftover-chew length. VCA’s chew-selection advice emphasizes supervision, suitable size and removal of damaged items.

Frequently asked questions

Can puppies or senior dogs have bully sticks?

Ask your veterinarian about an appropriate chew for your dog’s teeth, health and diet. A single age cutoff does not establish that a hard chew is suitable.

How long should a bully stick session last?

There is no session length that guarantees safety. Watch the condition of the chew and your dog’s behavior throughout, and stop if the chew loosens, breaks or becomes small enough to swallow.

Does a bully stick holder make chewing risk-free?

No. A holder is intended to grip a compatible chew. It cannot eliminate choking, dental injury or digestive risks, and it does not replace supervision.
