Pumpkin for Lick Mats: Plain Pumpkin vs. Pie Filling

For a pumpkin lick mat, choose plain pumpkin puree with no added sugar, salt or spices—not pumpkin pie filling. The two cans can sit side by side in the baking aisle, so turn the package around before you buy. The ingredient list matters more than the pumpkin pictured on the front.

This guide is about choosing a topping, not treating a digestive problem. If pumpkin is new to your dog, check with your veterinarian first, especially if your dog has dietary restrictions.

Plain pumpkin and pie filling do different jobs

Plain canned pumpkin is cooked pumpkin ready to use. Pumpkin pie filling or pie mix is prepared for a dessert and commonly includes sugar and spices. A label that says “pumpkin” prominently on the front does not tell you which one you have.

The American Kennel Club's pumpkin-spice guidance advises against feeding dogs pumpkin pie and canned pie mix. “Pumpkin spice” also describes a spice blend, not a serving of pumpkin; it is not a shortcut for flavoring your dog's mat.

Turn the can around: three label checks

  1. Read the product name. Look for plain pumpkin or 100% pumpkin puree. Put pie filling and pie mix back on the shelf for this activity.
  2. Read the complete ingredients. For the simple option here, choose a list that contains pumpkin only. “Organic,” “natural” and a pumpkin picture are not substitutes for this check. If the contents are unclear, choose a different topping.
  3. Check sweeteners separately. Never use a product containing xylitol. It can also be called birch sugar or wood sugar. “Sugar-free” does not mean suitable for dogs.

The FDA's xylitol warning recommends checking ingredient lists and contacting a veterinarian or emergency clinic immediately if a dog may have eaten xylitol. Do not wait for symptoms. This warning applies to sweetened foods you might add, too; it does not mean every can of pie filling contains xylitol.

Illustrative label comparison: choose plain pumpkin, skip pumpkin pie filling, and check for xylitol, also called birch sugar or wood sugar.

What if the pumpkin is homemade?

Keep a plain portion separate before preparing the family recipe. Peel it, remove the seeds, cook the flesh until soft, then cool and mash it. Leave out butter, oil, sweeteners and seasoning. PetMD's veterinarian-reviewed pumpkin guide describes this preparation and cautions that new foods and prescription diets need individual consideration.

Once the pumpkin has been mixed into a pie filling, scraping off the crust does not turn it back into plain puree. If all you have is the finished dessert, skip it. Your dog's usual spreadable wet food is another option; see our wet-food lick-mat guide.

Use a light coating, not a mat-sized serving

Choose the amount according to your dog's feeding plan, then spread it over an easy-to-reach part of the mat. You do not need to cover the whole surface. There is no universal spoon count for every dog, and pumpkin should not displace a complete and balanced diet. Stop offering it if your dog develops digestive upset and seek veterinary advice rather than adding more pumpkin as a remedy.

Start with the soft, unfrozen texture. The Chewise Pick & Lick has an easier Hooman side and a more detailed Pizza side. Use the easier texture first and stay nearby. Remove the mat if licking turns into biting or pulling at its edges.

Keep the next use simple

Follow the pumpkin package's storage directions after opening. Keep the unused supply separate from food that has been on the mat, and discard session leftovers. Wash the mat after use, clear residue from the grooves and let it dry. Pick & Lick is dishwasher-safe according to its current product instructions; our cleaning guide covers the detailed cleanup.

If you are choosing a mat for this routine, the yellow Pick & Lick provides two textures in one mat. Start with a checked ingredient, an appropriate portion and a coating your dog can comfortably lick.
