Why Does My Bully Stick Slip Out of Its Holder?

If a bully stick slips out of its holder, pause the session and check the fit, the locking mechanism and the condition of both pieces. A chew that slides out during your check is not ready to give to your dog. Tightening may solve an incomplete setup, but it will not make every shape compatible or repair a damaged holder.

The most useful clue is when the slipping happens: before your dog starts, only with one particular stick, or after a previously secure setup has been in use.

Start with the pattern, not more force

What you notice What to check next
The stick pulls out before the session. Recheck placement and locking using the instructions for your holder.
One stick slips, while others have held. Compare the thickness and shape at the part the holder grips.
The mechanism feels tight, but the chew still moves. Check that the chew is actually being gripped. Stop if it cannot be secured normally.
A previously secure chew becomes loose. End the session and inspect the chew and holder again before any reuse.
The holder no longer closes normally. Check for residue, damage or missing parts; contact the manufacturer if the cause is unclear.

1. Recheck installation with your dog away from the holder

Set up the holder before offering it to your dog. For Chewise, place the chew in the opening, use the screw mechanism to secure it and check the hold by hand. Our step-by-step holder tutorial explains the basic setup.

If the chew comes free, reset it and check again. Do not assume that resistance while turning means the chew is held correctly. If normal assembly does not produce a secure fit, stop rather than forcing the mechanism or adding tools for extra leverage. A hand check is a setup check, not a guarantee against your dog pulling a piece loose.

Insert, twist, then check the hold by hand. Set up with your dog away from the holder; stop if the chew moves or the mechanism does not close normally.

2. Look at the part of the stick inside the holder

A “6-inch” or “12-inch” label describes length, not the thickness of the gripping end. Check the actual stick rather than choosing solely by the package name. Is the end narrow, flattened, tapered or irregular? Does it sit as intended, or does it leave the mechanism unable to grip it?

Chewise’s product guidance calls for enough thickness and a consistent shape to secure the chew. An opening large enough to accept a stick does not, by itself, confirm a good grip. Use the Chewise holder size guide to compare options, then check each individual chew.

If another compatible stick fits normally but this one keeps moving, set the slipping stick aside. That comparison points toward a fit issue; it does not establish that the holder will work with every other stick in the bag.

3. Inspect the holder before blaming the chew

With the holder out of use, look for cracks, distorted parts, damaged threads, loose gripping components or anything missing. Also check whether leftover material is obstructing normal assembly. Follow the cleaning instructions for your specific model, then let the parts dry before reassembling.

Do not file down a component, bend the gripping mechanism or use glue to restore the hold. If the holder looks damaged or repeatedly fails to secure otherwise compatible chews, stop using it and ask the manufacturer about inspection or replacement.

4. Recheck a setup that changes during chewing

A successful check at the beginning does not mean you can ignore the setup for the rest of the session. If you notice movement, loose pieces or your dog chewing the holder itself, end the session. Inspect the current condition rather than assuming the original fit still applies.

VCA Animal Hospitals’ chew-toy guidance recommends supervision and removing items when dogs break off pieces or damage them. A holder does not eliminate choking or dental risks and is not a reason to leave your dog alone with a chew.

What not to use as a quick fix

Avoid wrapping the stick in plastic, tape, fabric or another material to make it thicker. Do not improvise with spare screws or household clamps. The goal is a compatible chew held by an intact product, without added pieces your dog could reach or swallow.

Buying a larger holder is not automatically the answer either. First establish whether the issue is installation, the particular chew or the holder’s condition. If you need help with a Chewise setup, email hello@chewisenow.com with your holder size and clear photos of the opening, mechanism and chew. Include whether it slips before use or becomes loose during a session.

Ready to check your next setup?

Compare the Chewise bully stick holder range with the chews you actually use. Before each session, confirm that the holder is intact, the chew is compatible and the assembled setup holds during your check. If you cannot establish those three things, choose another activity while you resolve the problem.
