Straight, Curly or Braided Bully Sticks: Checking Holder Compatibility

Straight, curly and braided bully sticks are not interchangeable when you use a holder. Check the shape of the section that must enter the opening and meet the gripping mechanism. A chew can fit through an opening without being held correctly, and a holder that works with one stick may not work with another from the same bag.

Before buying a different shape, answer two separate questions: can it sit in the holder as intended, and can the holder secure it using normal assembly? The shape-by-shape checks below help you look at both.

Compare the part you will secure

Chew shape Where to look Reason to stop
Straight The width, thickness and taper of the gripping end. The end fits, but the mechanism cannot hold it in its intended position.
Curly or spiral The end section and the first bend approaching the opening. The bend prevents normal insertion or leaves the chew sitting at an unsuitable angle.
Braided The full width of the braid, its ridges and the way its strands meet the grip. The whole braid cannot be seated normally, or a strand remains loose despite the apparent hold.

These are inspection points, not a compatibility rating for every holder. Check the instructions for your exact model; a shape name on a treat bag does not establish that pairing.

Straight bully sticks: inspect more than the outline

A straight stick gives you a relatively simple shape to compare with the opening, but “straight” does not mean uniformly round. Look along the end you plan to insert. A flattened area has both a width and a thickness, while a tapered end can be much narrower than the middle.

For example, a slim tip may enter easily even though a thicker section behind it will not seat as required. Conversely, an end may enter with plenty of room but still fail to meet the gripping mechanism properly. Check the actual contact area, not just whether the tip goes in.

If an otherwise suitable stick keeps moving after setup, use our bully stick slipping checklist to separate an installation issue from a fit or wear problem.

Curly bully sticks: allow for the bend

For a spiral chew, the overall width of the curl is different from the thickness of the chew itself. Neither measurement alone tells you whether its end can sit correctly in a holder.

Look at how much usable end section comes before the first curve. Does the curve meet the holder before the chew reaches its intended position? Does the shape push the end sideways while you assemble it? If so, do not treat tightening as a way to overcome the obstruction.

A short straight-looking tip is not, by itself, evidence of compatibility. If the manufacturer's guidance does not cover that shape and you cannot establish the intended placement, ask before using it. Do not bend or break a curly stick to make it fit.

Braided bully sticks: check the complete braid

With a braid, inspect the combined shape of the strands. Measure across the widest part of the section that must enter the holder, then look at its profile from the side. Measuring only one strand can give a misleading picture of the space the complete chew needs.

Also distinguish “one part is caught” from “the intended chew is secured.” A mechanism may appear to engage a ridge or individual strand while the rest of the braid is not seated as intended. If you cannot confirm the complete setup against the holder's instructions, do not offer it to your dog.

Do not unbraid the end, wedge a single strand into the opening or force the assembly closed. A larger opening is not an automatic solution: it may admit the braid without establishing the required grip.

What to check before ordering a Chewise holder

Use the Chewise size guide to compare the available sizes with your dog and the chews you use. Treat the opening measurement as a starting point. Shape, placement and the actual hold still need checking.

For a curly or braided chew you are unsure about, email hello@chewisenow.com with your holder size, the chew's brand and product name, and photos of the full chew and gripping end beside a ruler. Include both width and thickness where the shape is irregular. That is more useful than describing it only as “large” or “jumbo.”

Check the complete chew against your model’s instructions. An opening that admits a shape does not establish a secure hold.

A fit check is only the beginning

Once you have a compatible pairing, assemble it according to the instructions and check the hold by hand before use. Stay with your dog and stop if the chew loosens, pieces separate or your dog starts biting the holder.

VCA Animal Hospitals' chew-toy guidance emphasizes supervision and removing items when a dog chews off chunks or bites hard enough to stress their teeth. A holder does not make a chew risk-free or make an unsuitable chew appropriate for your dog.

Explore the Chewise bully stick holder range with your usual chew in mind. Confirming the individual pairing is more useful than looking for a universal “fits all shapes” promise.
